Editorial
It's a pleasure to be able to preside on an issue that has doubled the size of
CPC464 User. We still need plenty more input from users - although the
enticement of a E2000 competition has certainly wheeled along quite a few
cassettes during the past month, more words would not go amiss.
Surveying the scene
The software directory we start in this issue is
designed to provide a marketplace and guide for
specialist types of software - and to further this cause.
we offer a free small-ads section starting with our
next issue.
As many of you will know, we operate a registration
card scheme with hardware products to get feedback
from customers - and I thought you might be
interested to learn of some of the most significant
results from this ongoing survey.
The first point is that the majority of CPC464
owners are not first time buyers. In fact, one owner
seems to be a collector with no less than 7 other types
of machine.
The second point probably stems from the first
point, and that is that there is a strong desire for
second languages and applications software. A
general hunger for development tools and general
experience comes across from a brief scan of the
survey results.
This is probably a result of the fact that we did not
actually advertise the computers anywhere until the
start of September, so the majority of sales were to
the initiated who read computer magazines. This
strong hacker influence may shift with the national
consumer sales drive towards Christmas, but it's
really gratifying to know that so many of our babies
are being adopted into such good homes. There are
already many signs of good software emerging in
specialist areas, and the reports back from
experienced writers say that the machine and its
potential gets more exciting the more familiar they
become.
The sad truth of software marketing is that once
the retailer steps back from the obvious arcade
specials -the market not only fragments, it positively
shatters into a myriad of specialist interests. Several
big names had their fingers burned with too much of
the wrong stock this summer, so it's a brave store
that caters for interests such as Forth utilities and a
Small C compiler.
Disc time
Discs are nearly with us. Shipments start in
November, but don't be surprised if you don't see one
until December, since the demand is going to be
massive. Interest at the PCW show clearly shows that
users want discs very badly - and we are delighted to
be able to report that all twenty machines on the
show stand, together with all three disc drives,
worked faultlessly throughout the show.
Many naughty lads were spotted trying to reset
machines by switching the monitor onioff switches,
and some by using the [CTRL] [SHIFT] [ESC]
sequence, but you don't catch us out that easily when
some of us have been attending PCW shows since
they were tressle table affairs in small hotels. We
have seen it all before.
The only failure to report was the demise of a JY-1
joystick that suffered at the frustrated hands of a
Code Name Mat player who failed to realise that you
push forwards to dive. Better luck next time, whoever
you were - and bring your own joystick.
Service!
The delay in order processing at Amsoft has been
quite unforgivable over the past month or so. Maybe
if the accounts department shipped out their ICI,
mini and installed multiple CPC464's all this would
change, but we are promised a 'new look' to the
efficiency of order processing by the time this issue
arrives with users.
