Counter Terrorism

It is very difficult to combat terrorism as the terrorists work in small groups all over the country and not all countries will try to take care of the terrorist groups. It takes more than only one counter terrorism measures to disrupt the terrorist organisations because they work in different ways and every one of them have different methods of attacks. It is also very difficult to measure the effectiveness of counter terrorist methods used as the information’s may not be available for security reasons.

Diplomacy/Political Compromise

We can deal with the terrorist groups in a political/diplomatic way. We could try to talk to the terrorist groups or to their leader and see what they want to achieve, ask them questions and try to come to a compromise or give them your options of what we can do for them in order to stop what they’re doing. Some of the countries support different terrorist groups by giving them money and support which is a huge problem as if they would not have any money they would not be able to make bombs or get weapons into their hands but with the money from their sponsors they are now able to do this which leaves us with a much bigger problem. We need to deal with the sponsoring of the terrorist groups by applying diplomatic pressure on the groups or countries sponsoring the terrorist groups.

Economic & Social Sanctions – Iraq Pre and Post-Gulf War

We need to tackle the problem of other countries sponsoring and raising money for the terrorist groups as this only puts us in danger. We have to deal with this and we have different ways, for example ban terrorist fundraising because if the terrorist groups have the money to buy weapons then we are in trouble. If we will give everyone a good standard of living then they will not try to fight or try to make a disaster as they will be happy with the way they live. This could be done in many ways and the lives of the citizens might be greatly improved but not always everyone will be happy and there will always be someone that wants more than they have which doesn’t really sort out the problems.

Direct Retaliation Military Action – Afghanistan and Iraq

US have led “War on Terrorism” and they’ve sent their troops to another country for direct military combat to try to fight the terrorist groups so they will stop what they’re doing. Direct military action includes sending out soldiers to another country to fight against the big terrorist groups but this leads to many deaths of their soldiers, our soldiers as well as innocent citizens. This involves strikes, operations to undermine and destroy groups.  We also have to use the different public services to protect potential victims and property.  We also do training for counter intelligence personnel to give us better chance to fight those terrorist groups.

Use of Judicial & Legal System

We as a country try to deal with terrorism for example by signing international treaties which denounce the terrorist and terrorist groups, expand extradition treaties. We try to regularly introduce and update laws prohibiting any kind of terrorist activity, this is very good and essential as terrorists do have to be punished for any terrorist activities that they might be doing, we will also have to give very harsh sentences for the convicted terrorists this will discourage other terrorists to do the same as the convicted terrorists as they will not want to get the same sentence. We also need to speed up the judicial actions for terrorists so they will get their sentence before they have a chance to do anything else or escape this country. We also have to give witness protection so we can then gather more information’s from the public about any terrorist groups or members of them.

Measures to Prevent Domestic or International Terrorism in the UK

1)      Undercover Operations by Public Service Personnel

We use different high technology equipment to monitor terrorist groups and their members to see who talks with who and who belongs to which group, this allows us to see who the members of the terrorist groups are and by listening to their conversations and watching them closely they can prevent terrorist attacks which is a great success. We also improve and maintain links with other intelligence services this will give us many information’s as they might know something we don’t know.

2)      Training for attacks including Biological & Chemical attack

We need to ‘Target harden’ objects or people that may be at risk, we need to improve the international police relation and coordination’s. We run different simulations of terrorist attacks all around the country simulating the whole attack to try to see how our counter terrorist plans work in practice and then try to improve the parts that failed. We also encourage informants and infiltrators
