Macrobiotics: Eating for the Great
Life

Ancient Origins
The Huang Di Nei Jing ( Yellow EmperorÔs Classic of Internal Medicine),
the fundamental text of Asian medicine, was authored as early as the
third century BCE.
Nei Jing begins with Emperor Huang Di asking his minister Qi Bo: ÑIn
the days of old everyone lived one hundred yearsÈin our time, people
age prematurely, living only fifty yearsÈis it because people have lost
the correct way of life?Ò
Qi Bo: ÑIn the past, people practiced the Tao, the Way of LifeÈthey ate
a balanced diet at regular timesÈ[and] maintained a well-being of body
and mind; thus it is not surprising they lived over one hundred yearsÒ
(Ni, 1995).
Sun Si-Miao (Tang Dynasty, 618-907 AD): ÑWhen a person is sick, the
doctor should first regulate the patientÔs diet and lifestyleÈ.only if
changes in diet and lifestyle are not enough should the doctor administer
other interventions.Ò
Macrobiotic Ancestors
Ekken Kaibara, Ñthe Great-Grandfather of Macrobiotics,Ò (1630-
1714) a Japanese Neo-Confucian scholar, advised Ñeating grain as a
staple food, with plentiful amounts of seasonal
vegetablesÈconsuming foods that were peacefully prepared
according to the five tastes of sweet, sour, salty bitter, and
pungentÈ[and] animal protein to be eaten in minimum amountsÒ
(Varona, Macrobiotics for Dummies,2009).
Macrobiotik, or the Art of Prolonging Human Life (1796) by eminent
German physician Christopher Hufeland, Ñbecame a bestseller and
was translated into many languagesÈinsisted on treating the
whole person, stressing the value of a sensible lifestyleÈand a
vegetarian diet with regular exerciseÒ (Varona, 2009). In Greek,
ÑmacroÒ means great or big and ÑbioticÒ means regarding life. The
term has been interpreted to mean both longevity and taking a
big, or global perspective on life and health.
George Ohsawa (1893-1966)
Ohsawa watched his mother and
brother die of TB, and claims to
have cured himself of it through a
diet of whole traditional foods
including seaweed and ferments,
based on IshizukaÔs book Chemical
Theory of Longevity (1896).
Traveled to Europe, first book was
Unique Principle: Philosophy of
Macrobiotics (1929).
Traveled and taught around the
world, wrote many books, was
noted as a pacifist and imprisoned
for his views in Japan.
Founded Maison Ignoramus in rural
Japan, which trained the Kushis and
many others in his philosophy.
Ohsawa
ÑSome people think that
macrobiotics is no more than
the eating of sesame seeds
mixed with sea salt, carrots,
and brown riceÈHow far
from the truth! I enjoy any
cuisineÈI like fruit, candy
chocolate and whisky very
much. If I choose to use
these things now I am able to
avoid harm because I can
balance yin and yang. We
must choose what is good for
usÐthe art of making such a
