CS1x Patch Lists for Evolution Audio Pro / Sound Studio Gold

------------------------------------------------------------

LAST UPDATE: 20th of August 1999 -- RELEASE #2

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Thank you for downloading my CS1x Patch Lists.

This package contains the following four patch lists:

CS1x_P.PLS  (Yamaha CS1x Preset Performances)

CS1x_U.PLS  (Yamaha CS1x User Performances)

CS1x_E.PLS  (Yamaha CS1x Extra Performances)

CS1x_MV.PLS (Yamaha CS1x Material Voices) (NEW IN THIS RELEASE)

When I mention "Sound Studio", I mean the entire Sound Studio family

of MIDI sequencers, i.e. Sound Studio Gold, Sound Studio, etc.

2.0 DESCRIPTION

These patchlists are in the Evolution Patch List format, and are

compatible with Evolution Audio Pro (EVAP) and Evolution Sound Studio

family of fine MIDI sequencers from Evolution Electronics ONLY. They

will not work with Evolution Audio (EVA), Evolution MIDI, etc.

They also require the Yamaha CS1x (Control Synthesizer).

The CS1x_P.PLS file contains the names of the "Preset Performances".

Press the "preset" button on your CS1x synthesizer to switch your synth to

the Preset bank.

The names of the performances that were initially put in the "User

Performances" bank of the CS1x in the Yamaha factory are listed

in the CS1x_U.PLS file. Press the "user" button on the CS1x to activate

the User bank. If you have stored your own sounds into the CS1x, then it's

extremely likely that not all names are correct. You can switch back to the

original User Bank performances by playing back the "CSUSER.MID" MIDI file

that was supplied on the "BLUE X-TRA" disk. This disk was supplied with the

Blue Book which was supplied with the CS1x. If your CS1x came without

diskettes, you can download the Blue Book with the MIDI files from the

official Yamaha UK site: http://www.yamaha.co.uk. Be sure to save your own

sounds with the Dump fuction before doing this (see your manual for more

info)!

CS1x_E.PLS contains the names of the "Extra Performances". The Extra

Performances bank is also on the "BLUE X-TRA" disk from the Blue Book (see

above for more information). First Dump your own sounds into a new file

with your MIDI sequencer, then playback the "CSEXTRA.MID" file. This file

will load the Extra Performances into your CS1x's User bank.

Press the "user" button on the CS1x to activate this bank.

The Material Voices are listed in the CS1x_MV.PLS file. Material Voices

are sounds that can be used on all channels (excluding channels 2 to 4 and

the Performance channel (usually channel 1)), as long as the CS1x synth is

in the Performance mode (press the "Performance" button on the CS1x to

activate this mode). Even the "hidden" (undocumented) sounds of banks 123 to

126 are marked. See the Blue Book for more information regarding the "hidden"

sounds.

3.0 INSTALLATION

Copy the four PLS files to the directory that contains Evolution Audio Pro

or Evolution Sound Studio Gold. Start either Evolution Audio Pro or your

Sound Studio sequencer. Select "Options...", "Devices...".

Be sure that next to your MIDI-out port, to which the CS1x is connected to,

the "XG" option is selected. Click OK.

Click the "Options" menu, then choose "Patch Lists...". EVAP and Sound Studio

can only load up to 15 patch lists at a time. You probably want to load

two CS1x lists, one for your current performance bank and the Material

Voices list. Click on the arrow that is located next to "Current Instrument"

label. Select one MIDI-standard/synthesizer/module that you do not own or

use and click "Remove" (for example delete the Korg synths). Be sure not to

remove the XG entries, as CS1x also supports this MIDI standard! Repeat

this three times. Don't worry, the patch lists are not deleted from the hard

drive, you can always return to the original settings. Now click "Add...",

select the CS1x Performance List file that you want to use (CS1x_P for the

Preset Bank, CS1x_U for the factory User bank or CS1x_E for the Extra

Performances bank) and click OK. Do the same for the CS1x_MV files.

Click on OK.

4.0 SEQUENCING

This section describes the steps you should take each time you compose a

a (new) track with the CS1x.

4.1 CHANGE PERFORMANCE BANK

This documentation assumes that you use MIDI channel #1 for your Performance.

This is most likely the case, but if it is not in your setup, substitute

channel #1 with your performance channel number. See your CS1x manual for

more information about the "RCVH CH" setting of the "Utility" section.

In your sequencer, choose "Patch Lists..." from the "Options" menu and

click on the "Routings..." button. This handy window controls which

patch-list will be used on each MIDI channel. Now click on the arrow that is

next to the MIDI channel 1. This is the only MIDI channel which can

playback/record Performances. If you are using the "Preset" bank, you should

select the "CS1x (Preset)" option on this channel. Now click on "OK".

The selected channel will now list the performances. If you later decide to

use another Performance bank, you should repeat those steps and select

another bank, i.e. "CS1x (User)" or "CS1x (Extra)".

4.2 MATERIAL VOICES

If you would like to use Material Voices in your composition, do the

following: Double-click on the Patch name that is next to the MIDI channel

that you want to use (please remember that the Performance channel and

channels 2 to 4 cannot be used for Material Voices). Make sure the "XG"

Bank Type is selected. Then click on the "User" option. Your sequencer now

loads the "XG User" patchlist. Finally click on the "Current Instrument" box

and select the "CS1x (Mat. Voices)" option. All Material Voices of the

current bank are now listed. With the arrows next to the "Bank:" box, you

can change banks. Note that in CS1x's case, only banks 0-12 are filled with

sounds. Remember that blank entries do not contain sounds, so only banks 0,

4 and 8 are completely full.

You should repeat the above steps for each MIDI channel that you want to

use for Material Voices.

To access the "hidden" (undocumented) sounds, click with the mouse on the

"Bank" box, type either bank number "123", "124", "125" or "126" and press

the [TAB] button. I believe nobody has documented these patches yet, so I

decided just to just give them numbers.

Note that a few Material Voices, especially some "hidden" sounds, are

quite soft and/or have a very long attack, so not all sounds sound

immediately after hitting a keyboard key.

Finally, if decide you want to use a XG sound, simply click on XG. Your

sequencer will now automatically load the standard "XG" bank and change your

CS1x internally to a standard XG bank.

6.0 FUTURE

In a future release, I'll add Drum Maps for the "Dr:TechKt A", "Dr:ElctrKtA",

"Dr:JnglKt A", "Dr:HpHpKt A", "Dr:8o8Kit A" and the "Dr:9o9Kit A" drumkits,

so you can use the Drum Editor with the mentioned drum kits.

Btw: You can simply use these drum kits, by using the Material Voices (see

paragraph 4.2) and changing to bank 12.

I am very grateful that Evolution posted this package on their website. I

hope they will always want to carry the latest version.
