Metabladesarecharacterswhonotonlywieldboth
magicalandphysicalskillbutintegratethetwointo
acohesiveart.Manyofthembeginbymulticlassing,
learningthetwoskillsseparatelyandblendingthem
astheygo,butafewuseoneasapathwayintothe
other,honingmartialskilluntilpersonaldevelopment
unlockstheirmysticpotentialortwistingtheirmagical
mightintoatoolforpersonalcombat.

Rangersarehalfwaytobeingmetabladesalready,
withtheirselectionofspells.Theycanincreasethis
potentialwithlevelsofdruidorpossiblysorcerer,gain-

rustinggrasp,warpwood,shield,jump,seeinvisibility
and blur .
Arangercanmakeadecentbardifhehasgood

Classes
Forthepurposesofourdiscussion,classesfallinto
threebasiccategories
Martial Classes
Obviously,straightwarriorclassesusuallyneedto
becombinedwithsomemagicalclasstoqualifyas
metablades.Afewprestigeclasses,suchastheafinit-
istandtheshadowknight,allowawarriortoattaina
levelofsupernaturalprowessderivedfromhisskill
incombat.
Rogue
Rogueshavestrongpotentialasmetablades.Their
heftyallotmentofskillpointsandaccesstoskillslike
UseMagicDevicegivethemsomeconsiderablepower
bythemselves,andatypicalrogue’sabove-average
Charismamakeshimagoodcandidateforthesorcerer
class.
Idealogically,roguesarenotusuallyascompatible
withdruidsorclerics.However,neveroverlookthe
powerofcombiningthe sanctuary spellwithsuch
tacticsaspositioningtogiveanallyalankingbonus,
pickinganopponent’spocketoftheirbackupweapon
orsparewand,orstrollingthroughenemylinesand
unlockingthedooroutoftheroomsothepartycan
makearushattempttoescape.
Aroguewhowantsamorecombativeapproachcan
addapsychicwarrior’sconsiderableightingprowess
tohersneakattackandimmunitytolankingfora
formidablecombination.
Barbarian
Thebarbarianisaformidableighterwithscadsofhit
pointstooffsetaspellcaster’slowerhitdice,buthehas
somedificultiesasametabladebecausehisprincipal
abilitymakesitimpossibletocastspellsormanifest
powers.Suchacharacterhastochoosecarefully.
Oneapproachistotakesomelevelsasaspellcaster
andbeefupwithsupportspellsbeforeragingintocom-
bat.Spellslike aid,blur,cat’sgrace,delaypoison,expe-
ditiousretreat,greatermagicweapon,keenedge,shield
offaith and summonmonster canallhelpabarbarian
considerably,especiallysincemostofthemarelow-
levelspells.Asfarasrole-playinggoes,thebarbarian’s
outlookismorecompatiblewiththeluidnatureofthe
sorcererthantherigidlyintellectualwizard.
Experienceasabarbarianmakesagoodingredi-
entforenteringthemindclaworstormriderprestige
classes,andmetabladebarbarianswilllovetheoptions
offeredbythenewConcentratedAngerfeat.
Fighter
Theighterisanexcellentbuildingblocktobegin
convertingaspellcasterintoametablade,ashecomes
withnostringsattachedtohisclaimofmartialprowess.
Hisselectionoffeatsgiveshimmanyoptions,andthere
arefewcharactersindeedwhowillgainnobeneitfrom
accesstoWeaponSpecialization.
Aighter’sgreatestchallengeinprogressingasan
arcanespellcasterisgettingusedtothelackofarmor.
Fighterswhowanttobecomemagesshouldconsider
Dodge,MobilityorDelectArrowstoreducethehits
theytake;CombatExpertiseisparticularlyuseful,al-
lowingaighter/wizardorighter/psiontogainsome
defensivebeneitfromhishighintelligence.Aighter
whotakesaselectionoffeatssuchasPointBlankShot,
FarShot,WeaponFocus(bow)andWeaponSpecializa-
tion(bow)canalsomakeanexcellentrangedsupport
spellcasterorarcanearcher,reducinghisdangerby
stayingoutofmelee.
Someexperienceasaighterisparticularlyhelpful
fortheafinitist,martialadept,mentalmarksmanand
shadowknightprestigeclassesinthisbook,andmany
ighterswillappreciatethenewSpiritofIronstyle.
Monk
Monksneedsomespecialconsideration.Onone
hand,nearlyeveryclassbeneitsfromoneortwolevels
ofmonk.+3toallsaves,evasion,andtheabilityto
addyourWisdomscoretoyourACareallinvaluable
toanarcanespellcasterwhocan’teasilyweararmor
andneedstoavoidallthedamageshecan,aswellas
psionswhocantakearmorproicienciesifinclinedbut
stillhavelimitedhitpoints.
Magical Classes
Sinceallclassesgetabaseattackbonus(however
slight),spellcastersarebetterequippedtobesingle-
classmetablades.However,theyoftensuffersevere
drawbacksincombat,sosomecarefully-chosenlevels
inamorephysicalclasscanoftenbeworththelossof
spellcastingpower.

Wizard
Wizardshavetraditionallymadepoorighters.Until
recently,theycouldn’twieldmostweaponsevenif
theywantedto,andthewizardhidingintheback
ofthepartytohurlspellsisafantasyicon.Thenew
arcanefeatsinthisbookhelpawizardturnsomeof
hisspellcastingpowerintoacombatedge,butmost
wizardmetabladeswillwanttomulticlassinorderto
boosttheirhitpointsandattackbonuses.
Wizardscanbeneitfrommostphysicalclasses.They
shouldremaincautiousofthebarbarianclass,which
willreducetheirabilitytousetheirpowerseffectively,
butseethediscussionofbarbariansaboveforsome
ideasofhowtogettwosuchdifferentbeaststopullin
thesameharness.Rogueisprobablythebestchoice
thatisn’timmediatelyobvious,sinceevasion,uncanny
dodgeandastrongRelexsaveareallplussesfora
dextrouswizardwhotendstoattractireballs.Rogue
levelsalsogiveyouanexcusetocarryequipmentand
weaponstoreducethetelltalerobes-and-staffimage
thatsays,“Hey,I’mawizard!ShootME!ShootME!”
Wizardsareexcellentcandidatesfortheshadow
armorer,fortressmageandmartialadeptclasseslater
inthisbook.Theyalsogainaccesstoanewkindof
feat,thearcanefeat,whichcanbesubstitutedfortheir
itemcreationormetamagicbonusfeats.
Psion
Whilenotstrictlyamagicalclass,psionsinthe3rd
editionaremosteasilycategorizedasanothersortof
spellcaster.However,theycanpumpmostoftheir
powerintosignatureabilitieswithoutgivingupthe
optionofusingotherpowersifneeded.
Psionswhowanttomulticlassareprobablybetter
offchoosingighterorranger,asmostotherspellcast-
ingclassesusuallydon’tcombinewellwiththeir
powers.Spellcastingpsionsneedtwodifferentsetsof
itemcreationandmetaeffectfeatstomakethemost
oftheirabilities.
Thepsionisagoodbasisfortheastralcenturion,
mentalmarksmanandruneknightprestigeclasses.
Bard

class.Ontheonehand,bardscombinethe“wizardly,”
“martial”and“skillful”aspectsintoasinglecharacter,
butontheotherhand,theydon’treallyexcelatanyof
these.Thebardprobablyneedsalittlehelptobecome
apropermetablade,asfewbardicspellsarecombat-
orientedspellsandthebard’sweaponselectionand
baseattackarelimited.
Considerspecializinginrangedattacks.Abard
canchooseproiciencyinabowofherchoice,bards
typicallyhavehighdexterity,andstayingoutofmelee
combatmakesupforlowerhitpoints(Anelvenor
half-elvensingle-classedbardcanbecomeanarcane
archerat9thlevel).
Bardshaveagoodstartontheshadowknight
prestigeclass,althoughthistakesalittleimagina-
tion—theshadowknight’simagedoesnoteasilyit
thecongenialbardstereotype.Whatwouldsucha
characterbelike?.
Sorcerer
Sorcerershavedeinitelybecomethebattlemage
ofchoice.Theirpowertohurlaroundsignaturespells
inlargequantitieshasearnedthemareservedspace
onanybattleield.Unfortunately,theysufferallthe
samedrawbacksinclosecombatthatwizardsdo,with
theexceptionofslightlygreaterweaponproiciency.
Manyofthesuggestionsofferedforwizardsapplyto
sorcerersaswell.
Druidisalsoapossibility.Augmentthedruid’snatural
magicsandgreaterightingprowesswithspellsthatcom-
plementhisimage,suchastheclassic3rd-levelevocations
andotherspellsthatconjureforcesfoundinnature.
Sorcerershaveagoodstartonthemartialadeptand
shadowarmorerclasses,andseveralnewfeatscapital-
izeontheiringrainedknowledgeofcertainspells.
Paladin
Paladinsarethetoughestofthemixedclasses,with
theirmaximumbaseattack,d10hitdice,andgoodFor-
titudesave.Atthesametime,theirturnundeadability,
divinespellsandhealingpowersgivethemmuchmore
ofamysticfocusthanmanyotherighters.
Thisisgood,sincemulticlassingisnotusuallyan
optionforpaladins.Likemonks,theMeditativeGrace
styleoffersthemsomemulticlassingoptionsbuttends
todrawthemawayfromtheirusualcombativefocus.
Anex-paladincouldalsotakesomelevelsindruid,
providedthattheDMwillallowhertoretainher
paladinabilitieswhenshebecomesneutralgoodor
lawfulneutral,orinwizardorpsychicwarriorandgain
someconsiderablebeneitsaslongassheupholdsher
codeofconduct.
Apaladin/wizardcouldmakeapotentmartialad-
ept,andafinitistcouldprovetobeapowerfulchoice
aswell.Paladinscanalsobeneitfromthenewfeat
ShiningBrand.
Cleric
Traditionallytheparty’ssupportmemberandhealing
supply,theclericstillpacksafairpunchasamelee
combatant.Hislexibilityinwearingarmor,higherhit
pointsandgreaterbaseattackbonusallmakehima
betterchoiceifyoulikewadingintomelee.
Thebiggestchallengeofplayingaclericmetablade
isintegratingthetwosidesintosomethingcohesive.
Heoftenseemsbestequippedtohitthingswhen
everyone’shealthy,thenstepbacktocastspellsonce
combathasprogressedalittle,andhisspellstendto
focusonsupportingthegroupratherthanincreasinghis
ownprowess.Tobringthesetwodisparatesidescloser
together,preparespellslike shieldoffaith,bear’sendur-
ance,greatermagicweapon ,and divinepower .
LookintodivinefeatslikethenewShiningBrand
thatallowyoutochannelsometurningpowerinto
combatadvantage.ConsidertheDestructiondomain,
whichgivesyouanextrasmite,ortheStrengthdomain,
whichnotonlyallowsyoutoliftthatcollapsedceiling
offofyourcomradebutalsohelpsyouknockthatogre’s
headsofardownbetweenhisshouldersthathe’llhave
tounbuttonhisvesttoeat.
Wilder
Thewilderhasmuchthesamerelationshiptothe
psionasthesorcererhastothewizard.Wilders,how-
ever,tendtomakebettermetabladesbecausetheycan
devotetheirincrediblereserveofpowerpointstoa
concentratedcollectionofpowers,andtheirconined
powerselectionmakesitharderforthemtotakeon
thesortof“swiss-armyknife”lexibilityofawizardor
evenapsioninanycase.
Wilder/barbarianscanusethenewBlazingFuryfeat
toplumbthetruedepthsoftheiranger.
Druid
Thedruidhasagoodsupplyofcombatpotential,
withherd8hitpoints,moderatebaseattackandsup-
plyofspellslike poison and rustinggrasp . Wildshape
andspontaneoussummoningalsoassistthedruidin
atightspot.
Druidscanmulticlassaslongastheyupholdtheir
taboos,butkeepinmindthatwhilemulticlassingwill
Mixed Classes
Severalclassesalreadycontainablendofmagical
andmartialtalent.However,theseclassesusuallystill
requiresomedevelopmentorsupporttobemostef-
fectiveasmetablades.
