VIDEO LABORATORY – AWESOME AUDIO
Audio Recording and Editing Part 1,2,3
In this video, we’re going to setup a piece of software called “Audacity” to
record my voice. I’m going to read a monologue in various tones, volumes,
and inflection. Then, I’m going to take that through my own personal audio
sweetening process and make it both production and distribution ready!
In this first part, I will show you around Audacity and how to record your
voice.
AUDIO RECORDING and EDITING using Audacity
•
Audacity has many EFFECTS: Noise Removal tool will sample pure noise
from that area and then remove it from entire length of the recording

THINGS TO CONSIDER
•
Basis of QUALITY you are going to record is defined:
1.
75% of your microphone
2.
20% of your environment you record in
3.
5% settings of audio recording software
•
The software uses the CURRENT ACTIVE INPUT device found in
1.
MAC – Preferences, Sound, Input shows the current device
2.
WIN – Control Panel, Sounds, Input device
SETUP AUDACITY or any other software you choose
•
Go to the Software Preferences of your software
1.
Audio I/O panel
, look at Recording section:
Make sure the INPUT device matches your system INPUT choice
Select
ONE CHANNEL mono
May use “Two channel stereo” only specific to sound noise
reduction plug-in (Bias SoundSoap) in Adobe Premier Pro
2.
Default Sample Rate
: (Quality menu) Highest 48000Hz for voice
(any higher is overkill)
3.
Default Sample Format
: (Quality menu) Select 32-bit Float,
CD quality is 16-bit.
The More resolution you capture up front both in terms
of sample rate and bit-rate, the better off you’ll be
when adding sweetening effects.
Ultimately will get compressed down into something that
your viewer can watch online
4.
Click MICROPHONE dropdown icon
and select “Start Monitoring”
and then you will see your voice is registering with Audacity

Hit record button
6.
Record 7-10 SECs of
silence(timelime shows dynamic activity)

Read monologue
of your choosing

THINGS TO CONSIDER
•
Say THE TAKES: when stopped reading say TAKE 1, TAKE 2, ETC...
•
Say TAKE UP FROM BEGINNING – Start over, breathe in, out and begin
•
Say PICK-UP: Used when you want to continue right where you left off
•
Say PICK-UP: when words are butchered while reading, start in place
•
Varied the volume of your voice: Soft, loud, amplitude filters will
handle this during editing
Read Monologue of your choosing
•
Breathe in, out and begin reading the monologue
•
Andy is reading Peter O’Toole’s monologue from Ratatouille (2007)
•
When stop reading, say the take.. TAKE TWO, THREE so when editing you
can easily find those places
•
TAKE TWO from the top: Start again – Breath in, out and begin
•
Reading sometimes varies volume and amplitude – Use EFFECTS or
Filters in the editing program to smooth these out.
In this third part, I will show you how to export your project and talk
about various other sound editing programs that you can work with
Exporting your Project
•
Save the project
1.
Click on the
FILE
menu and select
EXPORT
2.
You can
fill out meta data
information and then select
OK
3.
SAVE-AS
dialog box appears, Change the
title
4.
Next drop down the EXPORT
FORMAT
and select FORMAT you want
Many different formats available some are compressed
distribution files (MP3, AAC, etc)
Select the
AIFF
, or
WAV
files (non-compressed formats)
•
Default choice: 16 bit AIFF – Apple non-compressed
•
Default choice: 16 bit WAV – Microsoft NC Format
If you select “
OTHER
”, you will get a plethora of
uncompressed formats choices, You may select:

32-bit Float
since we recorded in 32-bit Float

Once select the EXPORT
FORMAT
, Click
OK

Navigate to the
location
where you want to
SAVE
7.
Click
SAVE
Edit the file in Soundtrack Pro – comes with Final Cut Pro
•
Many tools built right into video editor that will accomplish a lot
of what Soundtrack 2 does accomplish.
•
Tools can be found in exist inside of plain vanilla scfeen capture
tools including Camtasia …
•
Andy choose Soundtrack Pro to teach the class because of
a.
A large VISUAL wave form view
b.
Add the effects to this waveform in real time

You will see how they change

Get a sense of how I am affecting the audio signal

Editing is very easy
•
Editing is cutting out the bad bits
•
You set an OUTPOINT and an ENDPOINT and hit DELETE or hit CUT
•
Now cut out all of the MIS-TAKES, PICK-UPS
