MIDNIGHT SUN

I saw the sun at midnight.
A falling star, my first thought,
Burst low in the valley, flaming bright.
Put on my cloak, hurried into the night.
I saw him...
He stood on the hillside, silent, brooding -
Another dreamer, so first I thought,
Drawn from his dismal unwarmed cot,
As I had left my pen, half-finished page.
Another dream...
The glowing torch of a journey half-finished -
A burning ship had through infinity journeyed
Ten thousands, ten thousands, ten thousands of miles...
Ten thousands of years.
I saw his eyes...
He spoke - a tongue I alone still knew,
Forgotten as his name, to all but a last few,
"Earth and Mankind - How does life stand
With you, the inheritors of this land"
He remembered...
"Where old gods laughed, while giants died,
And gold cities rose to tell Man's pride -
Till continents quaked, till oceans rose in steam -
Still the gods laughed at the death of Man's dream...
I fled that death..."

And I shivered in my cloak, and told him then
And the Dictates of Order, the Will of the Great,
Had stifled Man's freedom, had imprisoned his dreams.
He laughed...
"Law is the jailer of Man's natural wish;
Order, cold fetters of all that is free.
Your Civilization has betrayed you at last -
And so from Man's servant, has become instead master.
My ancient enemy..."
And Kane's eyes glowed, he shook his fist high,
"Let the Minions of Order know the Lord of Chaos has returned.
I vanquished Law once, I'll conquer yet again -
And force upon Mankind the Freedom he fears -
And dead gods I will again defy..."
He strode away laughing into the cold night;
Kane had returned, a new challenge begun.
No falling star had flashed false light -
I had seen the Midnight Sun.
