Narrator 1

Narrator 1              Welcome to 2Cs class assembly. In our Bright Sparks lessons we have been learning about the life of Florence Nightingale.

Narrator 2              Florence Nightingale was born in 1820. She was a nurse who was famous when she was alive and is still famous today.

Florence              Hello everyone. My name is Florence. I care for people when they are hurt or sick. This is my family.

Dad              Hello, I’m Florence’s dad. I taught Florence at home with her sister. I didn’t want her to become a nurse.

Sister              Hello. My name is Parthenope. People call me Pop for short. I’m Florence’s sister.

Mum              Hello, I’m Florence’s mum. We are a very wealthy family. We live in 2 grand mansions. One in the winter and one in the summer. They have 15 bedrooms!

Narrator 3              In 1853 the Crimean war started. The Crimea is in Russia near Turkey. Florence heard about the war by reading newspapers. Her friend Sidney Herbert was the secretary of war and he wrote to Florence asking her for help.

Sidney              Dear Florence, please can you come to the Crimea to help the soldiers. I know you are a very good nurse and we need nurses to help in the hospitals. Please please come soon. Yours Faithfully Sidney Herbert.

Florence              I wanted to go and help those poor soldiers so I set off on my long journey.

Narrator 2              Florence and her team of nurses set off from London to a hospital in Scutari which was in Turkey. They travelled by horse and cart and steam train. It took a very long time to get there.

Narrator 3              Scutari hospital was not next to the battle in the Crimea. People in those days believed hospitals should be away from the war so that the soldiers could be treated safely.

Florence              I arrived and was very shocked by what I saw. It was filthy and crowded with no clean clothes or medicine. To make matters worse there was a dead horse found in the well which was making everyone very ill. How could the soldiers get better in a place like that?

Nurses’ song- Nurses to come on stage.

Narrator 4              So Florence and her team of nurses made a plan. They worked really hard to make Scutari hospital clean and tidy. They made beds for the soldiers to sleep in and wrote letters asking for medicines which she got.

Narrator 1              Because of this, the soldiers loved Florence. Each night she walked through the wards with her lamp to say goodnight. They called her ‘The Lady with the Lamp.’

Queen Victoria Announcement

Narrator 2              When Florence arrived back in England, Queen Victoria gave her a brooch to honour her bravery. Florence continued to work hard and she set up her own school of nursing at St Thomas’ Hospital.
