Railways Illustrated.
I’m o en asked
by colleagues (working on non-rail
titles) what the attraction of older
diesels is. Obviously there are several reasons,
but one of the greatest is the noise – nothing
de nes power like a good loud thrash. en you
can factor in variety, as the rst generation 1950s
and 60s diesels o ered a plethora of notes, beats
and decibels. However, as the years have passed
so has the need to be a quieter neighbour, and
so designs from the Class 58 onwards have seen
a progressive reduction in noise levels. A Class
60 or 66 gives a subdued indication of its power,
but nothing compared to a Class 37 at full growl.
Fortunately, Vossloh has changed all that
with its Class 68. Okay it is still down on sheer

decibels, but boy does it sound meaty. is is
one reason, along with its aggressive styling, that
it has quickly established a solid fan base. In
this issue we chart the design’s brief history and
consider if a ‘new’ classic has been born. I feel
it has, and in 30 years’ time I’m sure enthusiasts
will be just as fond of the type as many of us are
of Hymeks, 37s, 50s, Deltics or 56s.
With more time and resource now available,
the ‘Rumours’ section returns from this issue
– in a carefully selected and scrutinised form.

many requests for it to return, and just as many
from people glad it had gone! During my years
dealing with aerospace companies and airlines
the risk of litigation for publishing anything
potentially damaging was one that had to be
taken seriously. e same applies to railway
companies – but hopefully we can again enjoy
some light-hearted speculation.
Meanwhile, new material continues to arrive
on my desk and I look forward to sharing it with
you this year. But don’t forget: if you have a tale
to tell or some old images that haven’t seen the
light of day for years, please get in touch, as I
and your fellow readers would love see them.
