Exercise - Create The Kick
Create the Kick
Let's go through the steps involved in creating the Kick Drum. You will find a video demonstration at the end of this exercise.
Initialised Settings
When you are creating sounds from scratch, it is good to wipe the slate clean and start with a default set of parameters on each drum channel. The Standard Tutorial setting provided by Apple is a good guide but does too much of the work for you. We will be initialising each Drum Channel in this example.
Here are the steps to create a kick drum sound:
· 1. Choose a Drum Channel (logically C1) and right click on it and select > Init > Sine
· 2. Turn off the Filter
· 3. Take Osc 1 Pitch down to 49Hz
· 4. Drop down Pitch Mod and route to Env 2
· 5. Increase the amount of Pitch Modulation to about +36 semitones
· 6. Set Decay on Env 2 to 110ms and adjust bezier curves
· 7. Now on Osc 1, increase the Modulation amount to about +35. You will hear now the punch of the kick coming through
· 8. Set Env 4 Decay somewhere between 300-400ms. You can adjust the length as you need.
· 9. With the basic kick made you can try out some possibilities, see the video below for some pointers.
