Swing Explained

Let's take a look at some of the things Mike used in the videos so that you can learn some more about the theory behind the techniques used.

Swing/Shuffle

Most of the time in Trance the beats are quantized to 'straight positions' but in the Tech Trance style example we saw that this wasn't the case. You could hear the difference but take a look at the diagram to get a better feel for the positions affected by swing (also known as shuffle).

As you can see from the diagram above, the even numbered 16th positions move to the right, although we don't visually see them move in the Ultrabeat grid itself. The fact that they all move to the right whilst the odd numbers stay put makes things sound so interesting.

Swing can also be added to your programming outside of Ultrabeat by dropping down the Quantize Menu. There are a selection of presets that are stepped to the right in increasing amounts of swing:

·                      16A Swing = straight 16th

·                      16B Swing

·                      16C Swing

·                      16D Swing

·                      16E Swing

·                      16F Swing = heavily swung
