QUAD-CORE NOTEBOOK OUTLOOK
A new report from IHS iSuppli nds that quad-core processors will become standard
over the course of the next several years. The IHS iSuppli Compute Platforms Topical
Report expects the number of notebooks shipping with the more powerful processors
to grow four-fold between 2012 and 2016. In 2012, notebook manufacturers shipped
48 million notebooks with quad-core processors (22% of all notebook shipments).
But by 2016 that number will climb to 179 million units, accounting for roughly three
of every ve notebooks shipped. In four years, Blu-ray Disc drives will appear in 16%
of all notebooks, and fully 100% of them will have 64-bit operating systems.
Despite its popularity, text mes-
saging might be on the decline.
TEXTING OVER THE HILL?
Approximately 20 years ago, the rst
text message was sent from a PC to a
cellphone, marking the birth of the SMS
(short message service). Since then, text
messaging has exploded in popularity.
According to Chetan Sharma’s US Mobile
Data Market Update Q3 2012, however,
it appears that text messaging may be
on the decline. The mobile analysis rm
reports that the total number of text mes-
sages, as well as the total messaging rev-
enue in the market, both declined in Q3,
which is a rst for the industry. Chetan
Sharma blames the declines on a rise in
low-cost or free IP messaging apps.

HOLIDAY SPENDING 2012 UPDATE
Once again, the Consumer Electronics Association has released its
Annual CE Holiday Purchase Patterns Study for the 2012 holiday
season. In it, the report finds that consumers plan to spend $1,634
over the course of the holidays, which is an 11% increase com-
pared to spending plans in 2011. Consumers’ gift budgets were up
9% compared to 2011, to $842. Of that amount, consumers plan to
spend an average of $252 on consumer electronics, which is similar
to the previous year’s $246. An impressive 76% of adults who plan
to give gifts said they will purchase consumer electronics during the
holidays in 2012.

time we spend with the Web and TV has
remained steady.
Adults are turning off the TV more and
more, and the young are leading the way.
MOBILE APP USAGE GROWS
A new report from Flurry shows that while Web browsing and TV viewing habits have
remained largely at (or even slightly down, according to some analysts) between
2010 and 2012, the use of mobile applications has steadily risen. As of December
2010, U.S. consumers spent 66 minutes a day using mobile apps. In December 2011,
we spent 94 minutes in mobile apps. The most recent ndings show that we’re now
spending an average of 127 minutes in mobile apps. That’s signicantly more than
the 70 minutes a day we spend on the Web, but still a good deal less than the 168
minutes a day we spend watching TV.
TV VIEWING DECLINES
According to a new report from
Nielsen, young people aged 18-
24 are watching less TV overall.
Between Q1 2012 and Q1 2011,
people in this age group watched
1:30 (hours: minutes) less per month
on average, which comes out to
about 13 minutes less per day. In Q2
2012, young people in this group
watched a weekly average of 22:32
of traditional TV. That’s an average
of 1:45 less than they viewed in the
same period in 2011, or about 15
minutes less a day. The downward
trend is also visible among all age
groups, though to lesser degrees. At
the same time, mobile app usage
continues to grow.
WE LOVE STREAMING
Streaming TV shows is more popular than ever. According to a recent Har-
ris Interactive study, 18-35 year olds watch almost as much streaming TV
(41%) as they do live TV (44%). The firm also reports that more than half
of Americans (53%) say they have viewed streamed TV programming on
a PC, tablet, streaming-enabled TV, or smartphone. Harris interactive also
finds that many Americans have the ability to watch streaming TV from a
number of devices: 30% via TV sets, 19% via set-top boxes or game sys-
tems, 17% via Internet compatible TVs. Some 20% say that they watch TV
mainly via a device.

IE 10 BETA OUT FOR WINDOWS 7
IE10 (Internet Explorer 10) was exclusive to Windows 8 when it was rst released,
but Microsoft recently provided an IE10 Release Preview for Windows 7, so you

WINDOWS 8 POWER
SETTINGS
You’ll need to start by accessing your
system’s power settings. The easiest
way is to simultaneously press the
Windows and W keys, which will
open the Settings Search menu. Type
power and click Change What The
Power Buttons Do. Select the Change
Settings That Are Currently Unavail-
able option and scroll down to Shut-
down Settings at the bottom of the
window. Select the checkbox next to
Hibernate and save the changes.
WINDOWS 8 SALES
After the rst month of sales, Microsoft sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses,
which is fairly close to the number of licenses sold for Windows 7 in its rst
month. According to Microsoft, Windows 8 is also outdoing Windows 7’s pace
for system upgrades for the same time period three years ago.
SHAREPOINT ENHANCEMENTS
Microsoft announced that SharePoint 2013 will offer a number of improvements,
including greater capabilities for use with social media, cloud computing, and mo-
bile devices. For example, you can share documents with others—both inside and
outside your organization—via a drag-and-drop interface using document libraries.
Task management can be consolidated across SharePoint, Microsoft Outlook, and
Microsoft Project. Microsoft also plans to introduce new native SharePoint Mobile
apps for Windows 8, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android devices.
SharePoint 2013 provides new features for sharing, as well as support for social media and mobile devices.
