Fixing a frozen handbrake – making a Handbrake Protector
Problem: the handbrake freezes on in winter.
Cause: the rubber gaiters that should protect the cables get damaged by road debris
and allow water into the cables
Solution: fit new cables, and make a protector plate to prevent the new cables getting
damaged.
Do make a protector plate immediately. New cables can be damaged within 6 months
of fitting. With a protector, they will work perfectly every winter for years.

If you decide to remove the drums to make cable replacement easier, see the

which shows a photo of how to force the drums off.
The first picture shows what the gaiters should look like.

Here is the protector fitted, held on by the two nuts that hold the cable guide to the
chassis.
All the above photos were provided by Stephen (Multiplax).
Below shows the less slick version made by Jon, using round guttering, and only one
of the nuts for mounting. The back end is held on by cable ties.
The protector is removed to show gaiters in good condition after over 6 years use.
