InSeptember2008,theshitinthissporttowardsthegrowth
marketsofAsiawasmuchlessdeinedthanitistoday, the
efectsoftheinancialcrisishadyettoilterthroughanda
youngSebastianVettelwasdrivingforthejuniorToro Rosso
teamanddreamingofworldtitles.

newcomertooneofthemostanticipatedGrandPrixofthe
seasonsumsupthefastpaceofthesport–andrevealsan
importantreasonbehindF1’s continuedsuccessinthe
businessofmakingmoney.
AsJeremy Grantexplains,farfrombeingjustanothercar
race,theSingaporeGrandPrixisaplatformforexecutivesfrom
acrossAsiaandbeyondtomeet,talk,strikedealsandenjoy
expensive dinners.AsTony Fernandes,chiefexecutive oflow-
costcarrierAirAsia,says:“TheamountofbusinessI’ve doneby
networking[attheevent]ismassive.”
Andyetinotherways,F1remainsconstant.Thesport’s
obsessionwithincreasingrevenueshasneverchanged,while
today, aswasthecasefouryearsago, speculationcontinues
aboutwhatCVC,theprivateequitygroup, willdowithitsstake.
TheintrigueandpoliticalmanoeuvringatthetopofF1is
alsoverymuchasithasalwaysbeen,whilethebigplayers–
includingBernieEcclestone,SirFrankWilliamsandStefano
Domenicali–have remainedunchangedforyears.
Ecclestone,perhapsunsurprisingly, isaconstantpresence
inthismagazine–atestamenttotheinluencethe81-year-old
exertsoverasporthehashelpedtotransform.AndDomenicali,
asJohnReeddiscoverswhenhemettheFerrariF1bossat
theteam’s Maranelloheadquarters,isfarfromthe“rakish
Italianracedriver”hehadbeenexpecting,butan“amiable,
bespectacledandstraightforward businessman”whostudied
businessadministrationattheUniversityofBologna.
Withsevenracesstilltorunthisseason,thechampionship
isalsoonaknifeedge,withasmanyassixdriversstillscenting
victory. Amidallthenoisethrownupbythemoney-making,
politicsanddealsbeingstruck,itisworthrememberingthereis
stillanF1worldtitletobewon. n
