Overview
The SCXI-1160 is a general-purpose relay module with 16
independent SPDT, also called Form C, latching relays. These
relays have very low on-resistance and a low thermal offset,
making them suitable for switching, routing, and controlling
low-level signals. The relays can also switch up to 2 A at
250 Vrms or 30 VDC. Each channel has a Normally Closed (NC),
Normally Open (NO), and Common (COM) terminal. You can
use several SCXI-1160 modules with a single DAQ board or
module to switch or control up to 1,536 signals or devices. The
DAQ board controls the SCXI-1160 relays through serial
communication over the SCXIbus in the backplane of an SCXI
chassis.
The SCXI-1160 is well suited for any application requiring
general-purpose signal switching or device activation. You can
use the SCXI-1160 relays to create unique switching schemes
using its high-integrity contacts. You can also use the SCXI-1160
relays to control external devices such as motors, lamps, or
heaters.

connections at the front signal connector – Normally Open
(NO), Normally Closed (NC), and Common (COM).
You can set or reset each relay without affecting the other relays,
or all relays can change state at the same time. When a relay
switches states, it is energized for a limited period of time (20 ms
maximum), minimizing the thermal offset voltage generated across
the contacts. Each relay is fully isolated for a working common-
mode voltage of 250 Vrms. The relay contacts have no access to
the analog backplane of the SCXI chassis, so that the backplane will
be protected from high voltages present at the contacts.
Data and Status Registers
Writing digital information to the Data Register drives the
16 relays. A DAQ device, SCXI-2000, or SCXI-2400 serially writes
data to this register via the SCXIbus. In this way, you can control
several SCXI-1160 modules with a single DAQ board or module.
The Status Register has a status bit that indicates the active status
of the relays.
Description
Figure 1 is a block diagram of the SCXI-1160. The major
functions of the module are described in the following
paragraphs.
SCXI Interface
The SCXI interface circuitry interfaces the data and status registers
to the SCXIbus and rear signal connector, which you can cable
to a DAQ board. The SCXI interface includes an address handler
and a module ID register that you can read over the SCXIbus.
Communications of digital data to and from the
SCXI-1161module is implemented over the SCXIbus using digital
I/O lines of the DAQ board or module, or directly by the
SCXI-2000 or SCXI-2400. Therefore, using an SCXI system in

Connection to DAQ Device
If using SCXI with a plug-in DAQ board or PCMCIA
DAQCard, you only need to cable one SCXI module in
your chassis to the DAQ board. The SCXI-1160 is
programmed by the DAQ device serially over the
SCXIbus. If the SCXI chassis includes only digital I/O or
relay modules, you can control the system with a
single DIO-24, DIO-32HS (6533), or DIO-96 plug-in
board, SCXI-2000 chassis, or SCXI-2400 module.
Otherwise, if the system includes analog input
modules, you can control the entire SCXI system with
any MIO Series or Lab/1200 Series product.

Single-Pole

reserve up to 4 digital output and 1 digital input lines (two ports)
of the DAQ device.
Software
NI-DAQ, the driver-level software needed to control your SCXI
modules, is shipped with the plug-in DAQ board,SCXI-1200,
SCXI-2400, or SCXI-2000.
Signal Connection
Field signals connect to screw terminals located in the SCXI-1324
shielded terminal block, which plugs into the SCXI-1160 front
signal connector. The SCXI-1324 terminal block has an NC, NO,
and COM terminal for each relay channel.
If configuring a system with TBX DIN rail mountable terminal
blocks, you can connect signals from the SCXI-1324 terminal
block to one or two general-purpose TBX-24F feedthrough
